In 1972, the Central Bank of Malta issued its first collector’s coin, the Maltese Bee, which commemorated the honey bee (Apis mellifera ruttneri), a species native to the Maltese islands, crucial for pollination and honey production. This coin holds deep cultural significance, highlighting Malta’s historical ties to beekeeping and its commitment to preserving natural heritage.

To honor this monetary legacy, Germania Mint created a modern interpretation of the original coin. The updated design, created by Natalia Danysz, is distinguished by its unique shape, meticulous craftsmanship, and artistic allure, symbolising a harmonious connection between the past and future in numismatic art. This modern edition embodies both tradition and innovation, paying tribute to Malta’s rich cultural and natural history. The Central Bank of Malta is a partner of this issue.

The obverse of the coin features a honey bee against the backdrop of a honeycomb, showcasing symbols characteristic of Malta. Notable details, precisely struck, emphasise the insect’s anatomy.

The ennoble coin was minted in a limited edition of 750 pieces, packaged in a lens capsule and a wooden box with a sleeve.
